Vocabulary Tutoring

  • Using age-appropriate vocabulary books, I pronounce words, explain them and offer ways to help students remember them.
  • At each lesson we review some vocabulary words from past lessons.
  • With the words the student has already studied, I create vocabulary quizzes for homework.

Vocabulary Instruction:

Many young ESL students I teach lack the ordinary vocabulary that native speakers of English have at the same age.  Showing pictures is often effective for a words like “oxen,” “patio” or “cello,” so I keep picture dictionaries at my home. Sometimes I draw pictures.  But when the child reaches third or fourth grade, usually a vocabulary book helps.  And by middle school, almost every student needs to be augmenting his vocabulary unless she reads widely and for hours a day.
